YOUNG CARERS

In Our Stars provides a rare chance for Young Carers to connect with others in a similar situation and interact with other members of their year group.

Estimates suggest that as many as 20% of children aged 5 to 18 in many areas of Guildford act as carers.* The incredible sacrifice these young people make, often goes unrecognised and hidden to society. Responsibilities for Young Carers may include looking after a relative with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or drug or alcohol problem. They may give a lot of physical help to a parent or sibling with little time for respite.

We started offering these free after-school sessions in summer 2021 at King's College in Guildford. Participants work on a variety of drama exercises, games and scene-work, taking inspiration from GSC’s main productions. We have also been able to arrange trips to see theatre shows with tickets generously donated by our sponsors. Sessions also include a break with doughnuts!

“The In Our Stars drama club is a huge hit with students at Kings, who all love attending and gain so much from it. This is used as a time where they can express themselves and most importantly have fun with friends whilst learning new skills and building their confidence. Rob and Eli are great and provide a structure and time for the students which allows them to let off steam in a fun and safe environment.” Kate Palmer – Eikon Young Carers organizer for Kings College

Participants benefit from:

  • An increase in confidence and opportunities to have fun.
  • An improvement in teamworking skills.
  • The making of new friends in the session.
  • Feeling happier at school.

“It’s really fun and you get to use your imagination and creativity.” Participant

“I got to meet other people I wouldn’t normally meet.” Participant

“I get to enjoy time doing something I love, with people that I don’t get to usually talk to.” Participant
