“The isle is full of noises,
Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.”

On a remote island a mother and daughter watch as a ship is wrecked on the shore; but this is no accident, and this is no ordinary island. As the survivors come to discover, magic does exist and those we think are lost forever are really just waiting to be found.

Shipwrecks, sorcerers and surprises, Shakespeare’s final play is an enthralling voyage of reckoning and redemption.

For our 50th production - yes 50th! - Guildford’s largest and most popular award-winning green space, Stoke Park, will be transformed as audiences are moved around the ‘island’ in a spectacular promenade production, with our own HQ building converted into the wrecked remains of huge ship.

Having created some of our best-loved shows (As You Like It 2021, Merry Wives 2019, the award-winning Henry V), Caroline Devlin returns to direct:

“Having Stoke Park as our world to play and promenade through is such a gift. Using the boating lake island, stone circle and rose garden, as well as GSC’s new HQ, makes for a striking island experience; the park IS the island. Prospero brings with her, her own brand of magic, which is alien to this world. A magic of circus, mysticism and illusion.”

Join us for an enchanting island adventure brim-full with magic and mystery.

Summer 2022: let’s make it magic!

Indulging alfresco is part of the open-air theatre experience, so bring your favourite picnic nibbles and we'll supply the liquid refreshment! We will have a fully licensed bar on site with wine, fizz, local craft gin and Hogs Back ale, lager and cider as well as hot and cold soft drinks. Please note, the bar will not be stocking food, and no alcohol is to be brought onsite. See Frequently Asked Questions for more details.

This summer our awesome open-air company boast a wealth of experience from stage and screen, and we’re honoured to have them in Guildford.

Making their GSC debuts are Benjamin, Joseph and Jim. BENJAMIN graduated from Drama Centre in 2019 and has already worked with Frantic Assembly at the Lyric Hammersmith and Waterloo East Theatre. JOSEPH boasts credits from National Theatre, Royal Court and Birmingham Rep, whilst JIM has done extensive work with the National Theatre including Troilus & Cressida, Peter Pan, and The Merchant of Venice for both NT and RSC.

We're thrilled to have ROSALIND back with us (Mistress Quickly in The Merry Wives of Windsor and Feste in Twelfth Night in 2019), who has worked at the RSC and The Mil at Sonning. She has an ongoing drama and discussion podcast called Tales from Behind the Twitching Curtain. As well as playing the Dormouse/Cook in our 2018 Alice in Wonderland and Cressida in our staged reading of Troilus & Cressida in April, DEWI has worked with Netflix, BBC and the Almeida Theatre.

DAN was last with us as Malcolm in Macbeth (Feb 2020), and has worked with the National Theatre and BBC Radio 3.  ANNABELLE was also in our Macbeth and most recently Tales from Hans Christian Andersen in Autumn 2021, after which she began a tour Much Ado About Nothing in the US with Actors From the London Stage.

Since first working with us in 2009, JOHANNE'S roles for GSC include Brutus in Julius Caesar, Gertrude in Hamlet (2011) and Lady Macbeth (2013), as well as credits with the BBC, ITV, many regional theatres and King Lear with Sir Ian McKellen in the West End.

Completing The Tempest cast are our fabulous Co-Founders SARAH and MATT who will be chalking up 79 shows between them for GSC this summer!!
