DAVID COPPERFIELD
Hello and welcome to Guildford Shakespeare Company’s production of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield.
We are thrilled to be back at the New Wolsey Theatre again with another new adaptation of a much-cherished classic. We had such a wonderful time with you all last year with Pride & Prejudice.
Dickens’ ‘favourite son’ is the whirlwind tale of a young man’s life from humble beginnings to literary renown. A journey of romance and adventure, it is filled with some of his most magnificently drawn characters including the deliciously eccentric Betsy Trotwood, scheming Uriah Heep, adorable Peggotty and one of his greatest comedy creations, the irrepressible Mr Micawber.
David Copperfield brings together many of the creative team (and actor Luke Barton) from our internationally acclaimed Pride & Prejudice which we produced in 2024/25. Telling Austen’s much cherished romantic comedy with 3 actors proved enormously satisfying, not only for us but also the 10,000s of audiences who saw it. So, we wanted to bring that same sense of feel-good, theatrical magic to Dickens and set about adapting his 370,000-word novel.
Director and Adaptor, Abigail Pickard Price:
“I think what excites me the most is David’s imagination: hidden away in a loft in London, he imagines he is Robinson Crusoe, climbing onto the Peggotty’s boat, he imagines himself in Aladdin’s Palace, the stories go on… His imagination allows us to open up ours and where is more exciting to do that than in the theatre?! The cast of three is a great challenge but also offers the opportunity for innovative choices and a lot of fun. In many ways, the small cast allows us to make the piece more theatrical than if we had a cast of hundreds. The greatest challenge though has been the epic nature of the story; it is a journey through decades of David’s life, over the course of which he meets a wealth of people. We wanted to make sure we honoured the heart of the story and Dickens’ style even if we aren’t able to meet each and everyone of Dickens’ original characters.”
