Shakespeare Workshops 2009 - 2010
“You have achieved the impossible and given
them a passion for Shakespeare!”

Guildford Shakespeare Company is committed to
providing quality educational support for Shakespeare,
as well as fostering new audiences for theatre.
Shakespeare wrote his plays to be played on a stage in
front of an audience
as entertainment, and so through
active learning - the
plays put on their feet, characters
physicalised, the lines said aloud – students
can
truly begin to
understand and appreciate what he wrote. As well as an Introduction to Shakespeare for Primary Schools and Year 7, we also offer workshops on the following plays, for pre- 15s, GCSE and A-Level, English and Drama:
| Much Ado About Nothing Twelfth Night King Lear Macbeth Romeo & Juliet As You Like It |
Hamlet The Comedy of Errors The Tempest A Midsummer Night's Dream Richard III The Winter’s Tale |
All workshops are designed to be practical, engaging and fun, exploring the text as a script written for performance.
“Thanks for a super workshop - you really brought Lear to life for us!”
Gerry Cirillo, Halliford School, Shepperton
Once young people are given the opportunity to make Shakespeare their own, their confidence with the language grows and so they are more ready and eager to develop their understanding and appreciation of the plays; which done properly, is an appreciation that can stay with them for life.
Through consultation with teachers and led directly by professional actors from the company with over 10 years experience of theatre-in-education, our workshops are designed to focus on the Text in Performance.
We understand that all teachers’ needs are different, and so we can tailor-make the workshop to your specific numbers, timings and particular area of interest; be it 10 pupils or 100, from 1 hour to a whole day, we will
create the workshop that will work best for you. Previous schools include:
As a rough guide we would say that a standard workshop for 35 pupils consists of a 2-hour session, and costs £5 per pupil.

“I knew the level of their success when I crept into the Hall to
the total silence of a rapt audience experiencing Shakespeare in a way
that mere English teachers can’t provide in the classroom.”
