Shakespeare in Business
Putting Shakespeare and business together might not sound like an obvious
combination,
but you would be surprised just how well they go together.
All businesses involve people and the affairs of businesses are dependent
upon human strengths and failings; the root of all good business is the
ability
to communicate clearly, succinctly and more often than not, persuasively.
By paying proper attention to the value and currency of language,
good
business will follow.
So how can Shakespeare help?
Shakespeare’s plays conceivably touch on every human
emotion and
his plays offer penetrating insights into what
makes people and organisations
tick at every level. Working
with Shakespeare enables us to engage with
incredibly rich,
exciting and potentially emotional situations and characters,
which
allow us to explore the motivations behind our own thoughts and
actions.
In these delicate economic times, embracing new ideas can often
pay dividends.
What would happen in a Shakespeare in Business workshop?
We can tailor the workshop to suit your needs, but as an example, for Saxton Bampfylde (one of the UK’s leading executive search firms), we designed a workshop to focus on ‘passion and performance’ and used the famous St Crispin’s Day speech from Henry V and a key scene from Richard III. The team were encouraged to get on their feet and start speaking Shakespeare’s words out loud. In a relaxed, informal atmosphere, and by approaching the scenes from the point of view of how actors would prepare them, the team were able to interpret how the ideas behind the characters’ motivations, thoughts and language could be used in their own workplace.
“[the] enthusiasm and insights into the world of Shakespeare were wonderful and the linkages into our work were excellent… it was a really fun and interesting session, exactly what we were after.”
Stephen Bampfylde, co-founder and Chairman of Saxton Bampfylde
