The Taming of the Shrew Two Gentlemen of Verona

The Two Gentlemen of Verona
Thursday 9th – Saturday 18th July 2009

Directed by Joanna Read (director of last year's acclaimed The Comedy of Errors)

The 2009 Season continues at the enchanting University Lake, where loyalty and passion collide will Shakespeare’s wonderfully fresh romantic comedy gem The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Two best friends, Valentine and Proteus, say their goodbyes and go their separate ways with high and exciting ambitions. But as with all young hearts, minds are easily distracted and an attractive young woman can so easily change young man’s priorities...even when it is your best friend’s girlfriend.

The play will be given a 1920s setting and the cast will be joined by two very special guests - Toffee and George - who will be sharing the role of Crab the dog!

Sparks are set to fly when two of Shakespeare's most enigmatic characters - the fiery Katherina and the swaggering Petruchio - take to the stage in the ever-popular The Taming of the Shrew!

To the frustration of Bianca and her legion of suitors, her father has declared that her older sister, the beautiful but volatile Katherina must be married first. All seems impossible until the equally tempestuous Petruchio arrives and vows, much to the surprise of everyone, to woo Katherina for his wife. Join us for this classic story of two hearts at odds with their world, set in the beautiful Guildford Castle Grounds.

Both plays, performed by the same cast, are considered to be two of Shakespeare’s earliest works, and will be brimming with the company’s infectious sense fun and attention to detail.
